Bernard Arnault was born in Roubaix, France in 1949. He studied engineering at the École Polytechnique in Paris and later earned a degree in business from the École des Hautes Études Commerciales. After graduating, he joined his father's construction business, Ferret-avinel. In 1984, he acquired the luxury goods company, Financière Agache, and renamed it LVMH. Under his leadership, the company has grown to become the world's largest luxury-goods company.
In 1988, Arnault acquired the Christian Dior fashion house. This was a major turning point for LVMH, as it allowed the company to expand into the fashion and beauty industry. Arnault has since acquired a number of other luxury brands, such as Louis Vuitton, Moët & Chandon, and Hennessy. He has also been involved in a number of philanthropic initiatives, including the Arnault Foundation, which supports education and the arts.
In 2000, Arnault was knighted by the French government for his contributions to the economy. In 2007, he was named the world's third-richest man by Forbes magazine. In 2011, he was named the world's fourth-ichest man by Bloomberg. In 2013, he was named the world's second-richest man by Forbes.
In 2014, Arnault was named the world's richest man by Forbes. He has since been overtaken by Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, but remains one of the wealthiest people in the world. He is also one of the most influential business leaders in the world, having been named one of the world's most powerful people by Forbes in 2017.
