Andy Grove was born András István Gróf on September 2, 1936 in Budapest, Hungary. He was a Hungarian-born American businessman, engineer, author, and a science pioneer in the semiconductor industry. He was one of the founders and the CEO of Intel Corporation, helping transform the company into the world’s largest manufacturer of semiconductors.
In 1956, he escaped from communist-controlled Hungary and moved to the United States, where he earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. He then worked as a research scientist at Fairchild Semiconductor, where he developed the first commercial silicon-gate integrated circuit.
In 1968, Grove co-founded Intel Corporation with Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore. He was the company’s first employee and served as its CEO from 1987 to 1998. During his tenure, Intel became the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer and the dominant supplier of microprocessors for personal computers.
In 1997, Grove was awarded the National Medal of Technology by President Bill Clinton for his contributions to the semiconductor industry. He was also inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2000.
Grove was also an author, having written several books on business and technology. His most famous book was “Only the Paranoid Survive”, which was published in 1996. He also wrote “High Output Management” in 1983 and “Swimming Across” in 2001.
Grove was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2000 and retired from Intel in 2004. He died on March 21, 2016 at the age of 79. He is remembered as one of the most influential figures in the semiconductor industry and a pioneer in the development of the personal computer.
